James was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Mark Henry Sutton and Lenore C. Sutton on October 10, 1930. He graduated from Judge Memorial High School in 1949 and then attended the University of Utah where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree. He was accepted to Loyola School of Dentistry, in Chicago Illinois where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery. He always said this was the best time of his life. There he met Betty Marquez, who was studying to be a nurse. They were married in January of 1958. They returned to Salt Lake where he set up his practice.
He loved flying and so went on to earn his private pilot's license. He was a proud member of the Flying Dentists Club. He Retired from Dentistry after 58 years of practice. He was one of the last "Real Old Time Dentists".
His favorite pastime was sitting out on his back balcony of his home with a good martini and cigar listening and watching the planes coming in to land.
He is survived by two daughters: Margo and Lynda (Miriam), who was the "daughter he always wanted" and his companion for many years, Emmy. Three grandchildren: Kaitlyn (Matt); James (Michael); Annah (Austin); his great grandson Van; his dear niece Julie and nephews, Mark and Chris. Preceded in death by his wife Betty, brothers Barney and Joe and his parents.
