Duane Bowring Welling

“I’ll be home for Christmas” takes on a special meaning for our family this year.  Duane Bowring Welling was born March 30, 1930 into a home brimming with love to Darrel and Bertha Welling. He was taught from an early age the importance of service, and exemplified that throughout his life. After returning from serving an LDS mission to the Central Atlantic States, he married Carla Ann Iverson on September 21, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple. Dad graduated from the University of Utah with a law degree, and proudly served in the Air Force. Upon completion of his military duties the family settled “temporarily” in Bountiful…where for the next sixty years they raised their family and built eternal friendships.  During this time Dad practiced law and was the president of the Davis County Bar Association.  He also served as Bishop, Stake President, Regional Representative, Stake Patriarch and President of the Iowa, Des Moines LDS Mission. He continued to serve as he chaired the Open House for the Bountiful Temple, served in the Temple Presidency, and then as a sealer for many years.  He was known for always having a treat in his pocket and a twinkle in his eye.  Following the death of his sweetheart eleven years ago, Dad married Glenis Burdette who became a cherished companion.  She preceded him in death last Christmas Eve.

Dad’s legacy of love and gospel service will live on in his 5 children, Wendy Hodgkinson (Clark), Brad (Susan), Richard (Rosanne), Darrel (Kimberly) Kathy Wilson (Steve), 24 grandchildren, and 35 great-grandchildren. He also leaves brothers Gene (Kelly) and Harold (Sally) Welling.  His sister DeAnna (Dee) Packer is joining the Christmas celebration on the other side.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 29, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Mueller Park Stake Center, 1800 East Mueller Park Road (1800 South). Friends may call Thursday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary 295 North Main St.,  Bountiful, and Friday morning from 9:30-10:30 at the church prior to services. The family would like to express appreciation to all of Dad’s wonderful friends, neighbors and ward members who have lovingly served him over the years.

In lieu of flowers Dad would ask that all BYU fans make a donation to the U of U Athletic Department.
