Dwayne's earthly mission was to come to our family as a special needs child. He returned to his Father in Heaven on 12 January 2018. He was born at the 2796th USAF Hospital, Norton Air Force Base, San Bernardino, California on 22 October 1963. His parents are Esther Marlene and James Winslow Young. Dwayne brought a sweet spirit into our home. As he was growing up we shared his challenges and had the opportunity to serve him in various capacities.
Dwayne was developmentally handicapped from birth but had a loving and generous heart, and loved everyone. When he was born he was very alert and smiled, and laughed early. He was a cute little guy and when Dwayne was about two to three months old several Sisters in his parent's Ward would insist that it was their turn to hold him while his Mother played the piano in Relief Society. They liked to make him laugh, because he laughed so easily and he had a laugh that would tickle your soul. All who encountered Dwayne as he traveled through his life experienced his incredible spirit and love. He was able to attend various schools and workshops for the disabled. Although his understanding of the Gospel may have been limited, he loved to be part of the Primary and watch various LDS Church programs, especially General Conference. Later, he participated in the South Davis County Handicapped Mutual and enjoyed being part of their stage performances and activities. He became an Eagle Scout. One of the highlights of his life was being able to meet President Gordon B. Hinckley and to shake his hand. Although he could not speak clearly, he knew who he was and was very excited to meet the Prophet.
Dwayne left this life knowing that he was loved and cared for. He will be missed and we are looking forward to seeing him again, as he really is, without the mental and physical limitations of mortality. Words are inadequate to express the appreciation and gratitude that we feel for all the caregivers and those that have blessed him throughout his life. We offer a heartfelt Thank You for your service.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and a nephew. He is survived by his parents Esther Marlene and James Winslow Young, brother Mark W. Young, sisters Kathleen Paradise and Dianne Whitten.
