Jay unexpectedly passed December 8th 2022, at the age of 86. He was comfortable and alert to the end. Even though our hearts are broken, his passing was a sweet experience with his family surrounding him.
His parents and siblings preceded him in death, and we know there has been a glorious reunion.
Jay was born in Logan, Utah. He graduated from Preston High School with high honors. He was an Eagle scout. He excelled in art and music. He received a full ride scholarship to Columbia University in fine arts. He was a part of the fencing team for four years while he attended there. Jay loved being in New York and all he was able to experience there. He returned to Utah and finished his architectural degree at the University of Utah. While he was in school, he met the love of his life, Alene Carson. They were married on November 16th , 1962 in the Logan Temple. Jay served 7 years in the Reserves. They were blessed with six children.
Jay did much on behalf of many ancestors as he worked on family history. He loved classical music and he was a gifted pianist. His children remember him playing every Sunday morning. He was an avid Jazz fan and loved to play softball and basketball. His sons’ nickname for him was Fast E.J.
He served faithfully in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Jay leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Alene Nielson, and his children Holly Paulsen, Brad Nielson (Annette), Dave Nielson (Emmaly), Julie Howard (Jeff), Jeff Nielson (Lee Ann), and Matt Nielson (Staci). Jay has 23 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.
