Edith Whitehead Gibbs

d. December 27, 2007

Edith Afton Whitehead Gibbs, 95, peacefully ended her earthly journey on December 27, 2007. She was born November 6, 1912 to John and Edith Hubbard Whitehead in Bench, Idaho, and grew up enjoying the company of her seven siblings and many friends while living and working in various farming communities throughout southeastern Idaho. In 1934, she caught the eye of Duggan Zundel Gibbs, and they were later married in the Logan temple and had two children, William Floyd and Carolyn Jean. The family lived and farmed in McCammon, Idaho for nearly 70 years. In 1999, she moved to Bountiful, Utah where she enjoyed the wonderful care of her family. Afton was a voracious reader and letter writer and always had a song and a happy, soft whistle on her lips. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, quilting, and stolen moments spent sunbathing in her secret spot. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many teaching and leadership positions. She was a valiant visiting teacher at the time of her death. She is survived by her children, Floyd Barbara Gibbs of Layton and Carolyn Keith B. McMullin of Bountiful, 14 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, and two brothers, Wallace and J.D. Whitehead. She was preceded in death by her husband, Duggan; sister, Inez Homer; and four brothers, Newell, Reed, Lowell, and Grant. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 4 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bountiful 53rd Ward Chapel, 1356 N. 650 E., where friends may call from 9:00-9:45 a.m. Friends and family may call at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main Street, Bountiful, on Thursday, January 3, from 7-8 p.m. A viewing and service will be held at the McCammon Idaho Stake Center at 2:00 p.m. prior to interment at the McCammon cemetery.
