Edmund Walter Allen

November 18, 1927 — May 17, 2016

Edmund Walter Allen passed away at his home in Bountiful, Utah on May 17, 2016 of causes related to advanced age. Edmund was born in Vernal, Utah on November 18, 1927 to Ammon Edgar “Ted” Allen and Edith McCoy Allen. Ed married Barbara Seegmiller in Salt Lake City in 1950. This marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in 1984. Barbara preceded him in death in 1986 and Dad married Sarah Henderson Moyes in 1990. She became his constant companion until the end of his life. He is preceded in death by his grandson Chase Webster Allen in 2001 and daughter Patti Allen Mortenson in 2009. He is survived by sons Gregory (Cathi) Allen, Ted (Mary Alice Page) Allen and Scott (Wendy) Mortenson. Because Sarah’s first husband, Keith, passed away at a youthful age, Dad became father to Sarah’s children Keith (Audra) Moyes, Kari (Richard) Gibson, Kirt (Ruth) Moyes, Karole (Gordon) Scott, Kraig (Melyssa) Moyes, 29 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren.
Dad grew up on the family farm in Vernal, attended Uintah High School where he was the student-body president, and then served in the United Stated Army First Cavalry Division during the occupation of Japan. Because he knew the firing order of a six-cylinder engine, he became a vehicle mechanic as well as a fireman. After his tour of duty, he attended the University of Utah on the GI Bill, earned a degree in Civil Engineering in 1952 and soon became a Structural Engineer. He served as President of EW Allen and Associates until his retirement in 1999.
Dad spent a lifetime working with architects and other engineers designing buildings. Some of his significant projects were the restoration of the Salt Lake City and County Building with dear friend Burtch Beall. This project was the first base-isolated historic renovation in the country, and he was invited to speak at international conferences on how it was accomplished. He later presented a preliminary plan to the First Presidency of how the aging Vernal Tabernacle could be turned into a Temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Ed was fond of that project because his grandfather, Orin Daniel Allen, hauled stone off of the mountain that was used for construction of the footings and foundation walls. Dad felt the Vernal Temple added a certain panache to his home town.
Dad enjoyed driving Old Mo, (his 1924 Dodge touring car) in parades, boating and fishing at Flaming Gorge, hunting on Diamond Mountain, traveling the world with Sarah, and splashing in the pool with his grand-kids and great-grand kids. His unconditional love was generously extended to every member of his family. Dad, we love and miss you!
Funeral services will be held on Monday May 23rd at 1:00 PM at the Bountiful 17th Ward located at 650 East 2150 South in Bountiful, Utah.
