Edward M. "Ted" Johnson

October 17, 1934 — September 14, 2013

Edward M. Johnson, commonly known as “Ted”. Edward was born in Tropic, Utah on October 17, 1934. He and his wife, Lois, have homes in Farmington and St. George, Utah. He developed an interest in flying after moving to Farmington, when 16 years of age. By the age of 18 he had earned his flight instructor and commercial pilot license. While serving in the military, he became a test pilot for helicopters. He was also involved in high altitude atmospheric research and scientific data collection. He retired from the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) as an air traffic controller after serving in that function for 23 years. His career took him to places to live in Virginia, various places in California, and in Utah. His interest in airplanes led him to air racing in the Reno Air Races. After racing for several years, he continued supporting this interest which spanned for approximately 42 years by doing volunteer work with the Air Race group. He was skilled with building, remodeling, and problem solving and was involved in building a couple of his own homes. Neighbors relied on his expertise and appreciated the use of his many tools. Other interests included in the past have been collecting antiques, camping, hunting, and motor-homing.
Surviving family members, other than his wife, Lois, are: a daughter Cheryl Zoltz of Woodland, Washington; a son Robert of New Hartford, NY; a son Gordon of Hope Mills, N.C.; and 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; and three siblings in Utah (Bertha McGee of Farmington, Bernie Johnson of Roy, Gay Matheson of Cedar City) and John Johnson of Merritt Island, FL. His two daughters, Sandra Kinghorn and Jeri Stevens, preceded him in death. He is a life-long active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Orchard Ward Chapel, 1533 N. 1075 W., Farmington, Utah with visitations at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 1941 N. Main, Farmington, Utah, Wednesday, September 18th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and also at the church on Thursday from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment is at Farmington City Cemetery, 200 E. 500 S., Farmington, Utah.
