Elaine Carlisle

May 18, 1923 — January 25, 2015

Bountiful-Florence Elaine Nicholes Carlisle beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend died January 25, 2015 as a result of injuries sustained in a fall at her home. Prior to her accident, she lived an active, independent and energetic life.

Elaine was born in American Fork, Utah to Sidney Wing and Grace Clark Nicholes on May 18, 1923. She was the proud daughter of a sheepherder. She graduated with a BS degree from BYU where she was active in many campus organizations including her beloved Val Norn Society. Upon graduation, she worked for two government agencies. After World War II, she met and married Rex Thornley Carlisle in the Salt Lake Temple.

Since her husband’s passing in 1984, she traveled to England, Paris, Rome, Norway, Budapest, Austria, Canada and many destinations in the United States. Elaine engaged herself in many literary groups and was a patron of the Utah Symphony and Opera. She was a faithful member of the LDS Church where she served in many positions including Ward Primary President, Ward Relief Society President and Stake Relief Society President. Elaine also volunteered for 18 years as a hostess at the Beehive House and nine years as a service missionary for the LDS Conference Center.
Elaine immensely enjoyed being with her family at parties, barbeques, weddings, baptisms, and graduations. She enjoyed needle pointing and reading in quieter times.

She is survived by her five children: Carolyn Hulse (Russell), Cheryl Goodfellow (Gary-deceased), Rex T. Carlisle Jr. (Susan), Gregory N. Carlisle, and Valerie Goodrich (Gary). She is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. Many have preceded her death including her husband, Rex Thornley Carlisle, parents, brothers Eldred Clark and Sidney DeVerel Nicholes and many other devoted family, friends and neighbors.

The family offers a special debt of gratitude to all the caregivers during her final days.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the Bountiful 36th Ward, 102 East 1400 South, Bountiful. A visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday morning 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful. Interment-Bountiful City Cemetery.
