Elaine Gull Fluhman, 97, died Saturday, September 8, 2012, in Bountiful, of natural causes. She was born April 16, 1915 in Meadow, Millard County, Utah, to Charles Robert and Martha Martin Gull. She was one of ten children born to Charles and Martha. During her early childhood, the Gull family moved from Meadow to Willard, Utah, where Elaine grew to young womanhood. In Willard, she met John Richard Fluhman, whom she married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 29, 1938.
Elaine was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Many of her happiest years were spent with her husband in the Pacific Islands, where they served labor missions together for the Church, including service in New Zealand and Australia. While her husband served as the Church’s Area Physical Facilities Director in the Pacific Islands, Elaine was using her varied and special talents as the president of the stake Relief Society in Sydney, Australia. In her last days in mortality, she continued to encourage her children to remain faithful and devoted to each other, to their families, and to the work of the Church.
Elaine was gifted in special ways. She loved gardening, her yard always immaculate and adorned with beautiful flowers. Birds were close to her heart and she was careful that they found loving care and food at her home. Elaine had a way of expressing herself beautifully in verse, as evidenced in the family’s collection of letters and cards she addressed to them and close friends through the years. Her posterity will be blessed by the detailed journal she kept. She was also known as a gifted cook, having learned much from her mother.
She is survived by her three children, Richard B., Salt Lake City; John Roger, Bountiful; Ann Hamby, also of Bountiful. She leaves twenty grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the Bountiful 31st Ward Meetinghouse at 585 East Center Street in Bountiful. There will be a viewing at the meetinghouse for family and friends prior to the funeral service from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Bountiful City Cemetery.
