Ernest Marrelli

April 15, 1924 — May 30, 2014

Biography

Ernie Marrelli, age 90, passed away on May 30, 2014 in Bountiful, Utah. Ernie was born on April 15, 1924 to Frank and Josephine Marrelli in Salt Lake City, Utah, the middle child of their family of seven (Josephine, Dominic, Joseph, Ernie, Dolores, Roy and Marie). A graduate of West High School, Ernie went on to serve in the US Navy from 1942-1946. He served his country honorably during WWII on the USS Puttnam Destroyer.
Following the service, Ernie returned to SLC and went to work at Montgomery Ward where he met his future wife. He and Muriel Jones were married March 13, 1947 and went on to create their loving family – twins Ron and Rod, daughter Robyn, and son Roger. He and Muriel raised their family in Rose Park and he supported this brood by working as a long haul truck driver, first for Ashworth Transfer, then later for Savage Brothers. He retired as Yard Foreman for Savage following 35 years of service.
Ernie loved sports – playing them and later watching them. In his later years the TV was always tuned to some kind of sporting event, whether it was an NBA basketball game or little league baseball playoffs. He bowled on two bowling leagues at the Bountiful Bowl right up until his death. During the last 10 years his favorite activities were bowling and going to Wendover. He looked forward to his monthly gambling jaunts (he budgeted his stash, and wouldn’t go the next month if he lost).
Ernie is survived by his daughter, Robyn Marrelli of Hailey, ID; son Roger Marrelli of Midvale, UT; and daughter-in-law Linda (Ron) Marrelli of Bountiful, UT; as well as 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also survived by sister, Marie “Ginger” Taylor.
Preceded in death by wife, Muriel; sons Ronald and Rodney; son-in-law, Paul Burbidge (Robyn); daughter-in-law, Nancy Taggert Marrelli (Rod); parents, Frank and Josephine; brothers, Dominic, Joe and Roy Marrelli; and sisters, Josephine LaRocca and Dolores Quinn.
The family is especially grateful to grandson, Alex Burbidge and his family Julie and Theo for leaving their home in Moab two years ago and moving in with Grandpa to served as his loving caregivers. It meant the world to Ernie to be in his own home surrounded by family and Alex has been Grandpa’s bowling partner and Wendover “chauffeur”.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, with family visitation from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Online guest book at www.russonmortuary.com.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Polycystic Kidney Foundation through the PKD Foundation, PO Box 871847, Kansas City, MO 64187-1847. While Ernie didn’t suffer from this disease, it contributed to the early loss of his wife and sons, and has had a huge impact on all his loved ones.
