Fern Randall Bartholomew, 89, died on Sunday, April 11, 2004 at the home of her son in Simi Valley, California. Fern was born on May 18, 1914 to Mabel Smith and Elbert Eugene Randall of Centerville, Utah. The third of four children, she attended schools in Davis County and helped her father on the family farm during the summers. Later she attended a semester at Brigham Young University before transferring to the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City. After graduating from the business college, she worked in the abstract department of Davis County Courthouse for a number of years. On March 2, 1942, Fern married Davis Bartholomew of Bountiful, Utah. She helped raise two children from his first wife and together they had eight more children. During their marriage, they lived in Bountiful, Utah; Tucson, Arizona; Seattle, Washington; Tullahoma, Tennessee; Provo, Utah, and Houston, Texas, returning to Provo after Davis?s retirement. He died on April 17, 1988. Fern served as a term president for the Engineers Wives? Club when her husband taught electrical engineering at Brigham Young University. While living in Houston, Texas, Fern served as Relief Society President and as Young Women?s President in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had a green thumb and loved growing all types of flowers both indoors and outside. Fern was also an accomplished quilter and made many of her children?s clothes when they were young. She loved music and played the piano and the organ for church as well as for her personal enjoyment. Her children and grandchildren will remember her for her sense of humor and contagious laugh. Fern is survived by Richard of Huntsville, Alabama; Marie Stepp of Chehalis, Washington; Bert of Frederick, Maryland; LaRue Cowan of Centerville, Utah; JoAnn Weidner of Kearns, Utah; Joyce Fink of Chehalis, Washington; Beth Bos of Houston, Texas; James of Simi Valley, California; Randy of St. George, Utah, and Blaine of Carbondale, Illinois; 55 grandchildren; 69 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 19, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Centerville 1st Ward Chapel, the old white church, 160 South 300 East, Centerville, Utah, where friends may call from 9:45 – 10:45 a.m. prior to services.
