Fern Kitchen Black 1921-2011

Fern Kitchen Black, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on April 17, 2011. She was born April 29, 1921, in Orem, Utah, to Edith Prestwich and Samuel W. Kitchen. She was raised in Orem, Utah, where she graduated from Lincoln H.S. in 1939. She also attended LDS Business College in Salt Lake City. As a young woman, she served a mission to the East Central States Mission for the LDS Church from 1941-1942. She married Floyd Harley Black on June 14, 1945 in the LDS Salt Lake Temple, and together they had six children. Fern came from a large family, and throughout her life her sisters were some of her best friends. Together they enjoyed many happy family activities through the years. She was a faithful member of the LDS Church, and served in many positions. Fern was an inspiring example of Christian living. She served a second mission with her husband to Western Australia from 1983 to 1985. She also served in the LDS Salt Lake Temple, and in her later years served as Relief Society president at the LDS Branch at the Veterans Hospital, which she dearly loved. Fern was devoted to her family, to those around her, and to her church. She leaves a legacy of love, devotion, and service. She is survived by her husband and her children, Jed Black, Douglas (Kass) Black, Karma (Melvin) Sanders, David (Teri) Black, Michael (Angeles) Black, and Robert (Marqueax) Black, 17 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Brenda Black, and three brothers and four sisters. She is also survived by one sister, Bernice Sheffield, and two brothers, Wesley (Fay) Kitchen and Lynn (Beth) Kitchen. Funeral services will be held at 12:00pm, Thursday, April 21, 2011, at Foothill 7th Ward 2215 East Roosevelt Ave, Salt Lake City, with a viewing prior to the service from 10:30-11:30am. The family expresses appreciation to Nilza Faria for her loving care of Fern and also to Intermountain Hospice for their kind services. Interment at Salt Lake City Cemetery.
