Fitzhugh Dewey Davis

July 16, 1934 — November 5, 2016

THE PURSUIT OF KNOWLEDGE AND THE LOVE OF BEAUTY
Fitzhugh Dewey Davis, Jr., (Fitz) died on November 5, 2016, in Salt Lake City.

He was born July 16, 1934, in Columbia, South Carolina, to F. Dewey Davis and Bertha Corrine Davis. Fitz, and his family, moved to Salt Lake City in 1941. He attended Salt Lake City public schools.

He served on active duty with the US Army, 1957 to 1959. Fitz married Carol E. Egli in May 1960. They divorced in October 1982. They had 3 wonderful children; Laura (Safety Harbor, FL.), Gregory (deceased), and Jeffrey (Salt Lake City). Fitz is also survived by 2 brothers, 3 sisters, 3 grandsons, and 2 great grandsons.

Fitz graduated from the University of Utah in June 1963 with a B. S. degree in Geology. He completed one year of graduate course work in Geology. Fitz was a geologist for the Utah Highway Department for 9 years during the peak of Interstate Highway planning and construction. In 1974 Fitz transferred to the Utah Geological Survey and, over the years, worked as an engineering geologist, economic geologist, environmental geologist, and mapping geologist. Fitz marveled at the colorful, scenic beauty in southern Utah and the serene deserts in western Utah. He is the author or co-author of 45 publications pertaining to the geology of various places in Utah. Fitz retired in November 1996.

Fitz enjoyed trips to Paris, Copenhagen, Mexico City, Florida, and many other places. Numerous visits to libraries, museums, and book stores were enlightening. Nature, however, was the chief instructor.

As per his request, there will be no funeral. There will be a private celebration of his life for friends and family on November 15, 2016 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the University of Utah Student Union Building, Crimson Room.
