On May 28, 1919 a special little girl was born in La Sauces, Colorado, to Celestino and Josefina Romero. She was their 7th child. She grew up in the San Luis Valley and learned at an early age to work hard which served her well throughout her life.
Mother loved to dance and sing. Music played an important role in her life. If she wasnt singing, she was whistling her favorite songs. She was at a dance when she met and fell in love with her future husband, Erastus Trujillo, a Mormon boy from the nearby town of Manassa, Colorado. She was only 16 when they were married in Taos, New Mexico on September 23rd, 1935, but their young love proved to be eternal. They were together in this life for 74 years.
She was converted to the Gospel of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their marriage was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on February 24th, 1949. From this eternal union 8 children were born; Josephine (Alex) Ruybal, Carol (Jerry) Hadley, Sam (DeAnne – deceased), Dave (Neweleen), Olivia (Jerry) King, preceded in death by her husband and 3 children; Erastus Jr., RoseMarie and Thomas. Mother found nobility in motherhood. She cherished and nurtured her 28 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren, 23 great-great-grandchildren and countless others (literally from all over the world) who called her Grammie.
She loved her role as a homemaker and her home was always welcoming and inviting to friends and total strangers because of her tender and loving heart. Mother loved cooking especially when she was making her famous red chili, fry bread, tamales and her most yummy chocolate fudge at Christmas time.
She was fortunate to have traveled and lived in many parts of the Western Hemisphere from Alaska to Chile and places in between. Her Church service was unlimited and her fondest memories are of working and serving with the Native Americans in Holbrook, Arizona, the Guatemaltecas in Guatemala, the saints in Chile, Costa Rica and Mexico. All gave her great fulfillment and many blessings and tender mercies filled her days.
She served a fulltime mission with her husband as Directors of the Mexico City Temple Visitors Center. She was ever faithful in living the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was diligent and dedicated to whatever the Lord asked.
She was an avid Utah Jazz fan and often leaped from her chair with her arms outstretched over her head as the Stockton to Malone combination did their magic! She was an active member of the California Latinas United Republican Women. At the advanced age of 95 she was an elect and revered Matriarch of all who surrounded her and was able to inspire and lift others with her beautiful smile and encouraging words. She taught her children to love the Lord, work hard, seek an education and to be involved in the world; not to be spectators only but to be contributors!
We will celebrate her incredible life on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fairways LDS Chapel located at 1533 N. 1075 W. Farmington. A viewing will be held from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
