Floyd Smith Hollingshead, 88, passed away on April, 22, 2016. He was born July, 10, 1927 in Delta, Utah, to John Elmer and Beatrice Smith Hollingshead.
Floyd grew up in the difficult post-depression years on a small family farm, graduated from Delta High School and constantly worked hard at numerous jobs, ranging from hauling coal to pitching hay, to assist in supporting his family. At age 17, when Pearl Harbor was attacked he enlisted in the Marines and served on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. He survived Kamikaze attacks, and served in the Japan occupation at the close of the war. Following WWII, he married Carrie Mae Sipe on June 10, 1948.
He was drafted into the Army in 1950 to fight in the Korean War and served for a year as the commander of a battalion of 20 tanks. He served so meritoriously that, at the young age of 24, he had been promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major and was offered to be commissioned a Lieutenant.
Thankful that he had survived another war, he elected to return home to his wife and young son and started a life and casualty insurance business. With no initial assets or formal training he bootstrapped his way into a prosperous business that expanded into many successful real estate investments.
In 1971, he was invited by the LDS Church to organize their insurance benefit programs. Over the next 20 years he also served as the Church's Director of Security, supervised the construction of over twenty Regional Bishop's Storehouses around the world, and ultimately directed the inspection and security of many of the Church's physical facilities and temples worldwide.
Floyd possessed a take-charge personality, was blessed with phenomenal common sense, and always saw what needed to be done. He was a born leader, had an infectious and charismatic personality, and had the ability to establish immediate rapport with anybody he met. He was the loving grandpa who naturally attracted children to climb up on his lap and receive big hugs, comfort and wise counsel. His great spirit will continue to positively influence and strengthen the lives of all who knew him and motivate wise decisions as the future unfolds.
He and his sweetheart, Carrie were blessed with 6 children John (Sally), Karen (deceased), Gregory (Jenny), Randall, Russell (Barbara), Shauna (Warren), and 26 grandchildren and 53 great grandchildren.
