Frank Luther Smedley

January 3, 1934 — July 9, 2022

Frank Luther Smedley, age 88, of Bountiful, Utah, passed away on July 9, 2022.

Frank Luther Smedley was born on January 3, 1934, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He attended Bountiful public schools and was involved with the Boy Scouts. He loved playing basketball and baseball. A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Frank dedicated two years of his life to serve in the Central Atlantic Stakes mission, spanning North Carolina, Virginia, and the Cherokee Reservation.

When Frank came home, he attended Utah State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Although it was the five longest years of his life, Frank looked back on his time at Utah State fondly and he will forever be an Aggie. Frank spent his life teaching in the Davis County School system and taught 6th grade for 35 years. He will always be remembered by his students. Sometimes before the school day began, Frank delivered milk, building the work ethic he was admired and respected for.

Frank married his sweetheart, Kay Marie Parkin, on April 16, 1957, in the Salt Lake City Temple. They enjoyed 65 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they had seven children and fourteen grandchildren, whom Frank loved with all his heart. In 2001, Frank and Kay served a mission together in Scotland. Frank was loved by his community and served various roles in his church.

Frank was the happiest watching a Western with a Diet Coke in his hand. If he wasn’t doing that, Frank enjoyed fishing, watching a Jazz or Utah State game, playing card games, and caring for his tomato garden. Frank was beloved by his family as dad and grandpa, his favorite titles. Frank made each grandchild feel like they were his favorite one. You knew Frank was home when you heard him whistling, and he was well-known for his signature song, “Higher Than the Birds.” You never left Grandpa’s house without a chuckle and a grin. While he wasn’t known for his singing voice, Frank will forever be remembered for leading the “family choir” every time they sang happy birthday.

Frank is survived by his wife, Kay; sister, Georgia; sister, Elizabeth; four children, Chris, Linda (Kevin), Kent, and Jenny; and eighteen grandchildren, Taylor, Justin, Breanne, Jacob, Nathan, Josh, Avery, Luke, Caleb, Caden, Kelly, Jack, Beau, Ellery, Eli, Malachi, Isaac, and Faith. Frank was preceded in death by his parents; his mother, Elizabeth; and his children, Kim, Joan, and Angela; and his sister, Luanna.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 15, 2022, at the Bountiful 31st Ward chapel, 585 East Center Street, Bountiful, Utah.  A viewing will be held Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, Utah and Friday morning from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services.
