Following complications of a stroke, Fred Henry Hegerhorst passed away in Highland, Utah on June 25th, 2012, at the age of 91. Fred was born in Reinsen, Germany on July 19th, 1920, as the oldest son to Heinrich Fredrick Hegerhorst and Marie Luise Karoline Ohlendorf. His family moved to Utah in 1929, and settled in Salt Lake City. Fred was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the East Central States Mission for 28 months and then served in the U.S. Navy for 3 years. Fred married his sweetheart, Vauna Barton, in the Salt Lake Temple in February 1947.
Fred loved his family and country. He loved scouting and served 15 years in the Boy Scouts. Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, and was a Master gardener. He was skilled in carpentry and building homes. Fred was very friendly and social with everyone. He was the Tom’s Candy Distributor and was known among friends and neighbors as the Candy Man. Following their mission at Temple Square, Fred and Vauna served as ordinance workers in the Bountiful Temple. Near the end of his life Fred was looking forward to being reunited with his parents and his brother Bill, who preceded him in death. He has three living brothers: Karl (Mabel), Ron (Linda), Walter (Ora), and Bill’s spouse (Valere). His children, Carolyn (Heber) Andrus, Keith (Gail) Hegerhorst, Betty (Karl) Pearson, Dale (Kathy )Hegerhorst, Cindy (Gregg) Colton. He leaves behind 30 grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 29, 2012 at the Orchard 6th Ward Chapel, 3599 South Orchard Dr., Bountiful, Utah. A viewing will be held Thursday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main and Friday morning 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment-Lakeview Cemetery.
