Gary Malmrose

Gary Malmrose, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, was called home to his Heavenly Father on April 14, 2021. Gary was born on January 11, 1955, in Salt Lake City to Elden and Jaquelyn Malmrose and moved to Bountiful soon after where he spent the rest of his life. Gary grew up as the oldest of three children, with younger siblings, Becky and Marty. Gary loved sports and played basketball and baseball throughout high school and was an, All-State baseball player and an All-State basketball player. He was offered a full ride scholarship to BYU in basketball and baseball but chose to play basketball at Utah State. He was a point guard and was considered a star athlete. He also excelled academically and graduated in accounting and went on to get his CPA license.

He married Stephanie Crosby, on August 22, 1974. They had five beautiful children, Cody, Jesse, Davi, Kacie, and Mitch Malmrose. They later divorced.

At age 25, Gary started an accounting firm with three amazing partners; Lynn Hansen, Robert Steed and Clarke Bradshaw and later added Ed Erickson, with Charrie Peay as the office manager. With a lot of hard work, HBME LLC has become a very successful accounting firm and was more like an accounting family.

He married Patti Rollins on, November 1^st 1997. It was a big decision since Gary had five kids and Patti had four kids, but they made it work and life was filled with love.  The family has now grown to 30 grandchildren and one great grandchild. And family parties were always treasured by Gary.

Gary loved watching his sons play sports and was often their coach. Gary was kind and patient but sometimes his acuteness to sports brought out his perfectionism, and the tone of his voice. Watching his grandsons play sports was always a thrill for him. He was always ready early for the games and couldn’t wait to watch. As Gary’s health declined over the last four years even watching from a wheelchair was worth the effort to him. He was keenly interested in all the activities of the grandkids, including dance, barrel racing, soccer, ballet, and orchestra performances.

Gary had his own music preferences and his music could always be heard when he was in his office.

Gary and Patti loved family vacations and there were many over the years, often going on one family vacation with his kids and grandkids, and another family vacation with Patti’s kids and grandkids all in the same one year. The last vacation was interesting. What do you do if you are probably going to be in a wheelchair for the rest of your life? Gary decided to pack up and go on two big vacations within a few weeks. Gary was a trooper and never ever complained even with a four hour visit in a Florida hospital. Gary was the best tour guide you could possibly have, and he always wore a brightly colored shirt which made him easy to find. Gary had his own Google map in his head, and Patti will be quite lost without him (literally and figuratively).

Gary was always eager to hear how everyone’s life was going and was the best listener. His qualities are numerous:  non-judgmental, generous, humble and meek. He was kind, honest, compassionate, long-suffering (literally), he was the very epitome of a Christlike man. He was the sun on a cloudy day and the calm in a storm.  He will truly be missed.

Gary is survived by his devoted wife, Patti, his son, Cody(Roni)Malmrose, son, Jesse(Lori)Malmrose, daughter, Davi(Willie) Watterson and son, Mitch (Krista) Malmrose. He is also survived by his step-son, Quinn(Stephanie)Jones, step-daughter, Christian(Tyler)Charlesworth, and step-son, Zach(Trish)Jones, and step-son, Jake(Katie)Jones, 15 grandchildren and 15 step-grandchildren and one step-great grandson, Adam Walker;  sister, Becky(Garry)Barfuss   and brother Marty(Mary)Malmrose.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved daughter Kacie Malmrose.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 22 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bountiful Heights Stake Center, 33 South Moss Hill Drive in Bountiful, Utah. Friends my visit with the family at Russon Brothers Mortuary on Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the service. The burial will follow at the Lakeview Cemetery in Bountiful.
