Gaylen Snow Young, Jr.

December 11, 1925 — January 6, 2019

                Gaylen Snow Young Jr. our loving father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 6, 2019 at the age of 93.  He was born on December 11, 1925 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  He is survived by his children Julie Bird, Susan Irwin, Janie Macfarlane, Colleen (Ron) Price, Mary Lou (Mitch) McClellan, Wendy (Steve) Pistorious and Brad (Jennifer) Wilson, his wife Beverly McCune and one sister Betsy (Joe) Newton.  He was proceeded in death by his second wife Ralene Young and his son Gaylen B. Young.

                Gaylen graduated from East High School and the University of Utah Law School.  He also attended Cornell University and graduated as a commissioned Naval Officer.  He served his country in World War II in the Navy from 1945 – 1946.  He was a Major in the Army Reserve and served for 20 years.

                In 1947 Gaylen served a mission for the LDS Church in Copenhagen, Denmark where he touched many lives.  He served as Bishop of the Monument Park Third Ward and served many years as a temple worker in the Salt Lake Temple.  He loved sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with others by teaching seminary for almost 20 years and as a guide on Temple Square.

                Gaylen was an outstanding athlete.  He loved tennis, golf and skiing.  Tennis was his passion; he played for the University of Utah and participated in the Huntsman Senior Games for over 25 years taking home scores of gold medals.  He traveled all over the country playing in tennis tournaments and for several years was a nationally ranked senior player.

                The family would like to express our love and gratitude for the wonderful care he received by the caregivers at Sunrise Senior Living Center and to the loving hospice workers at First Choice.

                We invite all family and friends to the funeral that will be held at the Holladay 18th Ward on 2625 East Milo Way in Holladay, Utah.  The funeral is Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 11:00am preceded by a viewing to be held at 9:30am to 10:30am under the direction of Russon  Mortuary.  Interment will follow in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
