Gordon Lowell Gunnell, loving husband, father, and devoted grandfather, passed away on October 31, 2024, surrounded by his family and in the arms of his beloved wife, Candi.
Born on February 12, 1934, in Logan, Utah, to Hazel Henniger Gunnell and Joshua Brown Gunnell, Gordon often joked that Abraham Lincoln shared his birthday. His siblings affectionately called him “Little Abe.” He was the fifth of nine children. Tragically, at age 17, Gordon lost his mother and was raised by his dear Aunt Ethyl, lovingly known as “Gammy.”
Gordon attended school in Logan, where he was active in high school sports. Known for his speed on the football field, he earned the nickname “Choo Choo.” He later attended Utah State University, remaining a lifelong Aggie fan.
On December 18, 1976, Gordon married the love of his life, Candace Layne Gunnell, and they were later sealed for eternity in the Bountiful Temple. Together, they blended their two families into one, bringing together ten children: Susan, Steven, Julie, Cindy, Richard, Brenda, Mecell, John, Jenifer, and Christopher. Gordon lovingly referred to them all as “our children,” and his efforts to unite the family were a resounding success, marked by cherished gatherings like Easter egg hunts and Halloween parties. He also took great pride in his 30 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren, who knew him as Gramps, Grampa, Papa Great, Grandpa GunnySac, and other loving nicknames.
For 40 years, Gordon managed the Sherwin-Williams store in Logan and Bountiful. His exceptional eye for color matching earned him a loyal customer base, with many traveling long distances for his expertise.
A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gordon held the office of High Priest and served faithfully in various capacities. Following his retirement, he found joy in playing the organ every Friday at the Bountiful Temple, a role he held for 20 years until COVID-19 interrupted. He frequently shared his musical talents, playing the organ and piano at church services. When he was younger, he even performed vocal solos at local events and Boy Scout State jamborees. He had such a beautiful voice. A song that he would sing was, “I’m Proud to be an American!”
Gordon is survived by his loving wife, Candi, nine children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as his sister, Gaye Gunnell Freeman (Kay). He is preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Joshua; his son, Steven L. Gunnell; granddaughter, Andrea Price; siblings Maxine (Glen) Wallace, Burke Jr. (Nita) Gunnell, Reed (Eunice) Gunnell, Joyce (Bruce) Ensign, Beryl (Algier) Cornum, and Dawn (Larry) Perkins.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to his hospice nurse, Kendra, for her loving care over the past three months.
