Grace Kitchen Callan, 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 3, 2023 in Farmington, Utah. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Grace's family meant everything to her. She was born on December 26, 1930 in her Grandmother Emma Wilson's home in Payson, Utah and was the first child of Ralph Sothern Kitchen and Marjorie Wilson Kitchen. She attended school at Taylor Elementary in Payson until her family moved to Provo where she attended Maeser School, Farrer Junior High, and Provo High School. She was the editor of her high school yearbook and attended Girls State. Grace was an avid reader, a devoted fan of BYU sports, and never missed an episode of Jeopardy.
Grace attended BYU for a short time before getting married at the age of 19. After the marriage ended in 1957, she supported her two sons, Paul and Mark, as a single mother for the next eight years. Employment opportunities took her from Provo to Tucson, Arizona and finally to Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1964, while living in Las Vegas Grace met Dale Callan, who had also gone through a divorce and had five children (Carol, Michael, Jim, Claudia, and Rhonda). Soon after their marriage six months later, Grace and Dale and the boys became active in the Las Vegas Sixth Ward and formed many close friendships which have lasted a lifetime. Two years later, in 1967, they solemnized their marriage in the St. George Temple.
In 1971, Grace and Dale moved to Overland Park, Kansas where they would spend the next nine years of their lives. While in the Kansas City area, church activity occupied much of their time, as Grace served as Stake Relief Society President and Dale as a member of the Stake High Council. Upon transferring to Utah, they purchased a condo in Bountiful, Utah and became members of the wonderful Mueller Park Fifth Ward. After retirement, Grace and Dale served missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Melbourne, Australia and Jacksonville, Florida. They also served for four years as Ordinance Workers in the Bountiful Utah Temple. In 2015, they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
Grace is survived by her eternal companion, Dale, her sons Paul (Kristie) and Mark (Sandy), and 10 grandchildren who meant everything to her: Stephen (Corinne) Callan, Jenny (Brian) McDonough, Matthew (Jessica) Callan, Emily (Andrew) Buckley, Wendy (Kevin) Burke, Lindsey (Shafer) Taylor, Robert (Rachel) Callan, Todd (Kara) Callan, Laura (Anson) Hooper, and Sara (Daniel) Lord, and was blessed with 47 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Ann (Val) Stringfellow. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Paul Wilson Kitchen and his wife Lisa. Grace was also preceded in death this past year by her sweet, angelic great-granddaughter Summer Anna Callan.
