Grant Cornelius

December 12, 1921 — March 31, 2016

Grant Cornelius (94) passed quietly from this world on March 31, 2016.

He was born on December 12, 1921, to James Elisha Cornelius and Lola Vilate Lee Cornelius. He was raised in Virgin, Utah. He enjoyed riding his horse, playing baseball, and participating on the debate team. He attended Utah State Agriculture College in Logan, Utah, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII where he served as a radio operator. After he was discharged from the Navy, he met and married Eleanor Gifford on December 12, 1946. They were later sealed in the St. George, Utah temple.  Together they raised six children.

He taught vocational agriculture in Idaho and science and math in California. He loved teaching and mentoring his students.  He was respected and loved by his students. But his true passion was his 2½ acre farm in Brentwood, California, where he raised cows, pigs, chickens, and a very large garden. He was active in the LDS church and served wherever he was asked, including Bishop, counselor in the Stake Presidency, and Stake Patriarch. He loved people and serving them.

He was preceded in death by his son Daren James and his wife, Eleanor. He is survived by his children, Jackie Erickson, Michael Kim (Karen), Jan Gruwell (Tom), Kathy Pearson (Mel), and LuAnn Miskin (Chad), along with 19 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, and 1 great, great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at the Kaysville 11th Ward chapel at 500 S. Main Street at 11 am on Friday, April 8th. A viewing will be held at the chapel prior to the funeral from 9:30 – 10:30 am. Interment will be at the Kaysville City Cemetery at 500 Crestwood Road. The family wishes to thank the staff at The Villas at Baer Creek and the Envision Hospice Team for their kind and loving care.
