Grover “Rusty” Hammond died peacefully on July 10, 2018 in Bountiful, Utah at the age of 82.
Rusty is survived by his wife, Rosemary “Topol” Hammond and son, Shawn Hammond. He is preceded in death by his father, Marcus Morton Hammond; mother, Ruth “Wells” Hammond; brother, George J Hammond; sisters Golda “Hammond” Olden, Gretta “Hammond” Grimes and Gloria
“Hammond” Thompson, all from New York.
Rusty was born on May 23,1936 in Chester, NY, to Marcus and Ruth Hammond. He graduated from High School in Pottersville, NY in 1954. Shortly after graduating high school, he entered and served in the US Navy. After moving to Chicago, Illinois in1959, he joined the LDS church, met Rosemary Topol and married her on June 29, 1963 and they just shared their 55th anniversary together. He attended DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago where he studied engineering. After getting some experience in metal fabrication and design. Rusty began his entrepreneurial career as an inventor and businessman. He founded and sold several companies and was awarded multiple patents over his decades of work. He was a visionary tinkerer and was always looking to improve the way things worked.
After 10 years of marriage, the couple welcomed their son, Shawn, into their home. In 1979, the family moved to Keller, TX where they raised Shawn and then moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa in 1991. After retirement, Rusty and Rosemary moved to Utah to be with family.
Rusty served in many capacities for his church and community. He was the bishop of the Burlington Ward in the Nauvoo Stake for six years and served the Lord and neighbors at every opportunity. He volunteered his time and money to support many causes that he felt were worthwhile. He valued his many friends and enjoyed sharing stories and spending time with them. He was a dedicated husband and father whose four granddaughters brought him the most joy of his life.
A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 200 North 200 West in Bountiful, UT. Viewings are scheduled for Friday, July 13th at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main in Bountiful, UT from 6-8pm and Saturday, July 14th from 9:45-10:45 am at the church prior to services. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Rusty’s life.
