Gustav Horn

Gustav Reinhold Horn, age 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 20, 2011, in Bountiful, Utah, surrounded by his loving family. Gus was born November 22, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York, to Wilhelm Hans and Wilhelmine Dahne Horn. Shortly after his birth, the family returned to Germany where Gus lived until the age of 17, enduring the hardships of World War II. In 1948, through the sponsorship of an LDS family in California, he was able to come to the United States, the land that he grew to dearly love, where he pursued an education at Pasadena City College. After completing two years of his studies, he was drafted into the United States Army and stationed in Zweibrucken, Germany. Upon completion of his military assignment, he enrolled in Brigham Young University where he met his eternal companion, Marilyn Stevens. They were later married in the Logan LDS Temple on July 17, 1959. His occupation as an accountant took him and his family to live in Baltimore, MD, Salt Lake City, UT, Frankfurt, Germany and eventually in 1971 to Centerville, UT, where the family settled down, loving the community and people that surrounded them. He worked for the LDS Church Financial Department for many years and retired from Bear River Mutual Insurance Company. All of his adult life, Gus was dedicated to the Boy Scouts of America and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. A pioneer at heart, he volunteered for several years at This is the Place Heritage Park where he taught pioneer dancing and on occasion portrayed Martin Harris, one of the witnesses of the Book of Mormon. In 1997, he and Marilyn participated in the reenactment celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Mormon Trail Wagon Train. He would have loved to have been born in pioneer times. Gus enjoyed any kind of dancing but especially the waltz as he taught young and old that beautiful dance step. He loved to study church history, world history and geography. Even though he had no pioneer heritage, he thoroughly enjoyed his involvement in the Sons of the Utah Pioneers Centerville Chapter. He was very fond of the outdoors; camping, Dutch oven cooking, traveling with friends and family. As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gus served in many positions of leadership including Bishop, Gospel Doctrine teacher and counselor in the Stake Presidency. He enjoyed teaching and sharing his knowledge with those around him. In 1999-2000, Gus and Marilyn served a mission to Nauvoo, Illinois. He was a very dedicated Home Teacher and loved the families he visited. Gus is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his children: Karen (Bruce) Hunt, Kurt (Jonna) Horn, and Julie (Bruce) Trimble; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Ingeborg Lynn, and many of his wifes family whom he dearly loved. Gus will be greatly missed by family and friends. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, March 24, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Centerville LDS Stake Center, 940 N. Main, Centerville, Utah. Friends and family may call on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, and Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the funeral services at the Centerville LDS Stake Center. The family would like to extend special thanks to the caregivers of the University of Utah Hospital NCCU, South Davis Community Hospital, Lakeview Hospital, and VistaCare. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a charitable organization of your choice.
