Hal Wesley Moon September 28, 1932 April 22, 2011
Hal Wesley Moon passed away peacefully April 22, 2011 from complications of heart disease after living a valiant and upstanding life. Throughout his life Hal was known by a number of titles, including Hal-boy, Elder, Private First Class, professional driver, teacher, salesman, and the names he cherished most, husband, dad and grandpa.
Born to Wesley Everett Moon and Bessie Ellen King in Kaysville, Utah, Hal grew up on Salt Lakes Capitol Hill as the only boy among four sisters. He graduated from West High School in 1949 and served in Germany during the Korean War from 1953 to 1954 and in the West Central States Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1955 to 1957. After 39 years of searching for the perfect woman, Hal finally found her and married Gayle Christensen in the Los Angeles LDS Temple on September 18, 1971. At the age of 40, he became a dad for the first time, a role he spent the rest of his life mastering. He always said, Life begins at 40. Though Hal was admittedly never a sportsman, nor was he really passionate about any hobbies, his love for his family was evident in every decision he made. He thoroughly enjoyed every moment he could spend with his children and grandchildren, always finding a way to work one of his quirky old school songs, his testimony of Jesus Christ, and his iconic sense of humor into every situation.
Hal graduated from Brigham Young University in 1964 with a degree in Speech and Sociology, with the goal of becoming a teacher. The day after graduation he was offered a job in sales and realized his gregarious personality and drive to succeed would drive his success. Hal spent the majority of his professional career as a salesman, primarily in the publishing industry, and lived by the motto Shy salesmen have skinny kids. Suffice it to say, his kids were always very happy and well fed.
Hal is survived by his wife, Gayle; three children, Melissa, Matthew (Lindsey Elise) and Jacob (Michelle); grandchildren, Ashley, Sarah, Jonathan, Lydia, Carson and Caleb; and his sisters, Jean (Harvey) Glade, Nellie Hale, Kathleen (Lowell) Brown, and Laraine (Mark) Walker. Preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, April 27th at 11:00 a.m. in the Canyon Rim Ward, 1050 East Galena Drive, Sandy. Friends may call on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. also at the ward. Burial will follow in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 4th Ave. & N Street.
