Hal "Rocky Mountain Catamount" G. Griffiths

Hal G. Griffiths our beloved son, brother, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather passed away to greet his eternal companion Irene and family members on December 5, 2017 at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home in Ogden, Utah.
Hal was born February 2, 1922 to Herman DeLoy Griffiths and Ruby Elizabeth Westerman Griffiths at home in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He grew up in Salt Lake City and Lark, Utah, and Jarbidge, Nevada with his parents and four brothers, Walt, War, Dee and Wiff (the five brothers called each other “Joe”).
Dad and Mom met in Salt Lake City on a blind date. They married 3 months later in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 22, 1946. Later their love was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on November 10, 1959. At the same time their three children Sharee, Peggy, and Hal were sealed to them as a family for time and all eternity.
Dad was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed duck, pheasant and deer hunting. His favorite hunting expedition was the yearly deer hunt spent with his brothers, son, grandsons, sons-in-law, and nephews. Many memories were made on Diamond Fork Mountain.
When Mom and Dad discovered Flaming Gorge Reservoir, they felt they had found “HEAVEN”.  Many long weekends and vacations were spent on the boat with family and friends trolling for rainbow trout. He continued his love of fishing at “HEAVEN” throughout the summer of his 95th year.
Dad was the family and neighborhood welder and fix-it man. He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, including strangers. You could always find him whistling while tinkering in the garage or in some of his shops. He created the first “Big Wheel”.
Hal worked at Kennecott Copper until he enlisted in the Army Air Corp. During World War II. He landed on Omaha Beach Day 2. He fought valiantly as an expert machine gunner and truck driver. Following the war, he learned the welding trade at Steel Engineers. He worked with men that he looked up to for many years. In his mid-30's he joined the United States Postal Service as a mailman until his retirement at the age of 62.

Dad was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His favorite callings were serving with the young men. He was looked up to as an example of how to be a man’s-man. He held many other callings. However, his second favorite was that of a home teacher.
Survived by his loving children: Sharee (Shirl) Clarke, Peggy (Kim) Hadfield and Hal (Valene) Griffiths; grandchildren Big Griff, Susan, Jeff, Tim, Ryan, Randy and Little Griff; great-grandchildren Brittany, Brianna, Kaylee, Kelsey, Samantha, Reed, Dallan, Jaydan, Alyssa, Swayzi, Jazzlyn, Steele, Rylen, Ella and baby boy Griffiths and Madison Lynn Griffiths that are in the oven and will join the family soon; great-great-grandchildren Carson and Keegan; and sister-in-law Frances Griffiths. Preceded in death by his loving wife Irene, brothers, Walt (Elfreda), Warren (Loraine), Darrell (Cleo) and Wilford (Jean); grandchildren David Pitts and Jennifer Miller-Cahoon; and great-granddaughter Amanda Cahoon.
The family would like to express their deepest thanks for the compassionate love and care offered by Bristol Hospice. We would especially like to thank his aide Cyce Perez aka “Mitzi” for her sweet, tender and loving care provided to our Dad for the past 3 ½ years.
A viewing will be held from 1:00 – 1:45 p.m., Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful. Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery, 1640 East Lakeview Drive, Bountiful. Please park one block east on Bountiful Boulevard.
