Harriett C Van Allen

September 8, 1938 — August 10, 2024

Harriett C. Van Allen - Born September 08, 1938 in Quincy, Fl. Harriett was the daughter of Lily James and Clarence Leonard Redding. She moved to Sanford Florida at age two and lived there until age 21. Harriett attended Stetson University on scholarship and led the band as a majorette. Her junior year, Harriett transferred to Florida State University. It was here that a dashing young Air Force pilot interrupted her studies and she married Dick on December 12, 1959.

Harriett and Dick made their home in Utah after Dick was assigned to Hill AFB in 1971. Harriett’s love of God and her family were her passions in life. Harriett led a Brownie Troop, taught Sunday School and directed Vacation Bible School for the children for many years. Later she was involved in Bible Study Fellowship and the Precepts Bible Study program as a student and leader. She delighted in sharing her love of God’s word with others. Harriett served as a deaconess at Washington Heights Baptist for over 12 years and was always a welcome encouragement for the entire church family. Harriett was widely known for her hospitality and impeccable skills hosting dinner parties.

Young enlisted Air Force crew members, foreign officers, and newcomers to church were often invited to her home and made to feel loved and welcome. Harriett made her church home at Mountain Road Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Fruit Heights since 2017 and recently developed deep friendships with her church family at Summit Vista.

In 2022 Harriett moved to Summit Vista with Dick. While sad to leave her flower gardens behind, Harriett delighted in the supportive community at Summit Vista and cherished all of the friends she made. It was some of the happiest days of her life.

Harriett was the anchor of her family and is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Richard L. Van Allen; daughters Stephanie (Van Allen) Edmonson and husband Rick, and Jennifer (Van Allen) Bell and husband Paul. Grandchildren Mark Edmonson and wife Courtney; Lauren Edmonson; Hannah Bell and husband Ryan Rubernick; and Tabitha Bell.
