Harry Reed

November 25, 1920 — March 4, 2011

Harry C. Reed passed away peacefully on March 4, 2011 at the age of 90, surrounded by family. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, honesty, and integrity. We will miss him but know he is rejoicing in being reunited with his dear wife Carol whom he missed dearly. Dad provided endless love, protection and care for our mother, especially during her last few years. He also had a great love for his children and grandchildren which he demonstrated with his appreciation and generosity.

Harry was born on Nov. 25, 1920 in Bountiful, UT. He was the sixth of eight children born to Joseph Herbert Reed and May Holbrook Reed.

Harry graduated from the Davis High School class of 1938. He attended Utah State University. On July 9, 1942 he married his sweetheart Carol Burns. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Just four months after their marriage, Harry was drafted into the Army Air Corps. He served in WWII in the South Pacific. They were together for 67 years until Carol passed away in 2009.

Harry was employed by and retired from the US Postal Service. He also worked other jobs such as night watchman and power plant mechanic at LDS hospital.

Harry was an active member of the Sons of Utah Pioneers. He held many positions in the LDS church including: being in the elders quorum presidency, Sunday school president and teacher, executive secretary and assistant ward clerk, first counselor to the bishop, and Bishop of the Taylorsville 29th ward. Harry and Carol served a mission to Dublin, Ireland and the Church Office in Salt Lake City. They were temple workers in the West Jordan and Bountiful Temples.

Harry lived all his life in the Bountiful and Salt Lake area. Harry and Carol had a great love of travel and traveled the world together.

Harry was a farmer at heart and kept a beautiful garden from which he shared vegetables with family, neighbors, and friends. Carol loved to quilt and taught Harry to love it also. They spent many hours quilting. Each grandchild received a baby quilt when they were born and a queen sized quilt when they were married.

Harry is survived by his seven children: Charles B. (Erolene) Reed, Joseph B. Reed, Nola Carroll, Kathleen Schvaneveldt (Kim), Ben E. Reed, Jane Lalor (Dan) and Mark B. (Sandy) Reed; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and all his siblings – six brothers and one sister.
