Our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather returned home while surrounded by family on December 13, 2023. Throughout his life, Harry prioritized his family, and his story displays this love prominently.
Harry Mifflin Standing was born on September 27, 1936, to Barclay Jarvis and Ada (Mifflin) Standing, the youngest of his siblings: Barclay Jack (Marie Larson), Madge Bingham (Jack), Keith Mifflin (Coleen Bingham), Ben W. (Gloria Christiansen), and Joan Hogge (Glen).
On June 6, 1958, Harry married Laura Reve' Henderson in the Salt Lake City Temple. They had four children, Jeanette Forrey (Franklin), Laura Male (Robert), Karen Gerlach (Rus), and Brent (Karen Skeans).
While working as a civil engineer for the Forest Service, Harry and his family lived in McCall, Idaho, the perfect place for Harry to embrace his two loves, his family and the outdoors. While the family lived in McCall, Harry thought about taking up golfing again but decided to buy a boat because, in his own words, "it was something he could do with his family." And that's what he did, taking his family to Payette Lake every Saturday during the summer months. Harry loved to make others laugh, and one way he did this was by taking comedic items with him while riding a 'disc' he had made to be towed behind the boat. He would take a lawn chair and newspaper to read and would finish off the routine by doing a headstand. In 1977 Harry transferred to the Sawtooth National Forest in Twin Falls, Idaho.
When his wife Reve' was experiencing liver failure and chronic illness, he chose early retirement so he could spend time with and support her.
Following Reve's passing in 1997, Harry met Doris LaRae Thomas Bullock Palmer, and they married on February 6, 1999, in the Jordan River Temple. This added 11 more children to his family, and how he loved to tell people he had 15 children! They are Randy Bullock, Ronda Bullock (Jim), J. Dean Palmer (Valene Shields), Beatrice Johnson (Dean), Brenda Livingston (Blain), Treasa Perkins (Larry), Shirlene Remington (David), Greg Palmer (DeAnna Carter), Michelle Giles (Troy), Brett Palmer (Cindy Holt), and DeAnn Christiansen (Bill). This brought his family to 15 children, 47 grandchildren, 131 great-grandchildren, and 31 great-great-grandchildren.
Harry graduated from Ben Lomond High School, Weber State College (before it was a University!), and Utah State University.
Harry could talk to anyone and loved to tell stories. His favorite stories involved the cars he owned over the years, and if you knew him, you have probably heard them at least once. Three of his favorites to tell included: his first car that had a wooden frame and the doors sagged 'this much' (and he would hold up his fingers to show just how much), the car he had that needed to be cranked every third time to get it to start, and the time their family car was acting up and the engine went "clang-bang clang-bang" and they needed to "shut 'er down."
Harry was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints, fulfilling a variety of church callings, and with Doris served as a missionary at the Conference Center, the LDS Employment Center, and the Family History Library.
Although his family on Earth love him and will miss him dearly, Harry returned home with love to his family in Heaven: Wives - Laura Reve' Henderson & Doris LaRae Thomas Bullock Palmer; Parents - Barclay Jarvis & Ada; Siblings / In-Laws - Barclay Jack, Madge & Jack Bingham, and Keith Mifflin; Children - Beatrice Johnson.
