Helen was the daughter of Carl Paul Freudenberg and Nettie Cora Lee Jordan. When she was only three years old, her family moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she grew up. She met her sweetheart Gale Snow Bird during World War 2 while he was in technical training in Chicago. They married on December 23, 1944 and were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on January 8, 1945.
