Helen Bavelas slipped away peacefully at her home on Sunday, July 30, 2017 at the age of 88. Even at the end of her life, she showered smiles and love on her family. There was nothing that brought her more joy than being surrounded by her growing family. Helen was born on February 5, 1929 in Sperchiada, Fthiotida, Greece to Andrew Chris Paraskeviotis and Parskevi Thonastogosta and had seven siblings, five brothers and two sisters.
Helen married James Spero Bavelas on the 13th of August, 1950 in Vallejo, California. After which, she and Jim settled on the family farm in Centerville, Utah. She was known for being able to grow anything under the sun, showing great hospitality, and being self-reliant on the farm. She was able to create magnificent works of art through her crocheting and needle work. But above all, she loved her family first above anything else.
She leaves a legacy of knowledge and life living that is lost today. Helen is survived by her two sons, Spero Bavelas and Andrew Bavelas; daughter-in-law, Joanne Bavelas; seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. She now joins her husband, daughter, two grandchildren, and other beloved loved ones. Helen was known by many loving names, but everyone knew her as Yiayia.
