Herbert Lawrence Scovel, passed away on July 5, 2024 in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of 90. Born on March 23,1934 in Caliente Nevada, Herb was a man whose life was as vibrant and dynamic as the landscapes he loved to explore.
Herb was an avid outdoorsman and was a passionate fly fisherman, even tying his own fly’s and making his own bamboo fishing rod to fish with. He loved hiking in southern Utah’s Indian ruins, camping, boating and hunting. Herb was a good shot, but cherished most the time around the campfire with friends and family, laughing and telling stories.
Beyond his adventurous spirit Herb was a people person. His infectious smile and engaging stories made him a beloved figure not only with his family but just about anyone who he encountered. He will especially be missed by his neighbors in Syracuse.
Herbs greatest love was his wife of 70 years, Beverly Joy Scovel who preceded him in death in August 2023. Herb often spoke of Bev as his guiding light, and his numerous poems dedicated to her are a testament to their enduring love. His family finds solace in believing that Herb and Bev are now reunited, hand in hand watching endless sunsets together.
A proud Veteran, Herb served in the Army and Air Force. His military service and training led him to his career as an Air Traffic Controller at the Salt Lake International Airport. A role he held until his retirement. He met many of his best friends working in this high-pressure environment. They relied on each other laughing and telling stories to relieve the stress.
Herb loved flying and maintained his pilot's license until his death. He could identify what kind of aircraft was flying overhead just by the sound it made, he loved watching the aircraft and jets flying over his home.
He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He dutifully fulfilled many callings and was a well-loved member of his ever-growing Syracuse ward. A special thank you to Bishop Allen and the Barber Acres Ward for their love and support of Herb and Bev in their final years.
Herb is survived by his children, Lauri (Bruce), Holly (Jenni), Doug (LeeAnn). He also leaves behind 5 grandchildren Tiffany, Brandon, Alex, Liz and Abi as well as 5 great grandchildren. Herb was preceded in death by his beloved wife Beverly Joy and his parents Oliver L. Scovel and Violet Brown and all of his siblings.
