Howard H. Richardson, Col.
April 29, 1929 – February 12, 2016
Howard H. Richardson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, passed away unexpectedly at home on February 12, 2016. Howard was born in Vernal, Utah to Hiram A. Richardson and Sarah Hardy. He grew up in Vernal and graduated from Uintah High School in 1947, and participated in music, track and field. He graduated from Utah State University with a degree in Civil Engineering. While at the University, he met the love of his life for the next 63 years, Drue Alder. They were married in the Logan, Utah Temple and together they had 5 wonderful children.
Howard spent 30 years as an engineer and pilot in the Air Force, Active and Reserve, and retired with the rank of Colonel. He worked for the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) for 37 years as a Civil Engineer, in design and management. His last assignment was as Chief Engineer and Assistant Director of UDOT. Howard was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served his first LDS mission in Northern California, and later with his wife, they served together in the Nauvoo Temple. He recalls this Nauvoo experience to be one of the crowning events in his life. He served faithfully in multiple ward and stake callings, including Bishop. Since the dedication of the Bountiful, Utah Temple, he served there as an ordinance worker and later as a temple sealer. Family was Howard’s passion. He and his wife found great satisfaction in attending their children’s, grandchildren’s, and great grandchildren’s activities, and made them a priority in their lives. He was an example of a lifelong learner, loved spending time working in his yard, and enjoyed helping others.
Howard is survived by his wife, Drue; children, Clay (Julie) Richardson, Kurt Richardson, Jill Richardson, Jan Scharman, and Marilee (Keith) Nielsen; 14 incredible grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren with one on the way. Preceded in death by his parents and only brother, Marvin Richardson.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 19th, at 1:00pm at the Mueller Park Stake Center (1800 Mueller Park Rd, Bountiful). A viewing will be held prior to the funeral service from 11:30am-12:30pm. There will also be a viewing at Russon Brothers Mortuary (295 N Main, Bountiful) from 6 – 8pm on Thursday, February 18th. In lieu of flowers, Howard and his family would appreciate contributions to be made to the LDS Church Missionary Fund or the Perpetual Education Fund.
