Ila Mae (Schoonover) Gillespie, beloved wife, sister, mother, aunt, and grandmother, passed away at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, surrounded by family on July 14, 2014.
Ila was born in Redmond, Oregon on October 9,1930, to James and Lula Schoonover; sibling to twin sister Iva and her late brother Jack. The family later moved to Burley, Idaho, where her father worked as an oil driller, and where many of her relatives still call home today.
Ila met her sweetheart at Utah State University where she majored in physical education and was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. On August 31, 1953, she married Col. With Don’s service in the military they were able to enjoy a life of travel, living in and visiting various countries all around the world. Ila was loved dearly by all she met and was blessed to have many worldwide friends whom she cared for deeply.
She lived a healthy, active lifestyle; she coached both volleyball and softball. She participated in a weekly bowling league and could be found swimming at the pool each morning. She was also very passionate about gardening, Utes Gymnastics, and the Utah Jazz.
She was an active Latter-Day Saint in the Kaysville 3rd Ward, and loved serving at the Bountiful, Utah, LDS Temple for the past 18 years. Her last words were of love for her family and her powerful testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
She is survived by her sister Iva (Grant) Wyatt, her husband Don, and their four children: Barry (Nancy) Gillespie, Nicole (Zach) Tippetts, Rex (Lorna) Gillespie, Jada (Todd) Peterson, and 13 grandchildren.
