Ilene Hayward King

November 19, 1940 — April 2, 2022

Ilene Hayward King wrapped and placed a bow on the gift of her life April 2nd, 2022.  As a decoration on that gift, and as a tender mercy, she enjoyed sharing her final moments surrounded by her family before parting peacefully. She is survived by her high school sweetheart and Husband of 60 yrs E. Dennis King of Centerville Utah, her children, Jason H. King, Lonny & (Amy) King [Grandchildren – Katelyn & (Preston) Alvey, Anna King, Nathan & (Melanie) King, & Carson (CJ) King],  Kellee & (Spencer) Heward [Grandchildren –  Zackary & (Kelsea) Heward, Jeromy & (KaeLee) Heward, Colby Heward, & Grady Heward], Kyle King [Grandchildren – Courtney King, Vanessa King, Meghan King].  With great grandchildren Sophee Heward, & Emery Heward & Siblings Verlene Beck, Gayle & (Darrell) Bailey, & Shawna Clawson.

Ilene was preceded in death by her Parents Aldin & Etta Hayward, Sisters Aldene & Elaine, & her eldest Son Kevin.

Ilene was born November 19th, 1940, the 5th of 6 daughters, to Aldin and Etta Hayward of Bountiful, Utah.  Her Father owned and operated the local grocery store known as Hayward’s Market and taught her the value of working hard, instilled in her a nature of ambition & service, and promoted family gathering. Her Mother fostered in Ilene the love and devotion to her family, giving help to others in need, and the skills of needlework.  Her mother perpetuated pioneer handcrafting as an avid quilter, making wedding quilts for all of her daughters and 24 grandchildren.  Ilene has carried on that tradition creating quilts for her 5 children and 11 grandchildren.  Ilene finished her first quilt at the age of 18 and has never stopped.  With over 60 years in the art, Ilene has been recognized for her beautiful quilts through the years and honored with numerous first place, best of show, and sweepstakes awards in several state and local quilting competitions.  She very much enjoyed devoting her skills to the annual humanitarian quilt auction benefitting patient care and healing at LDS Hospital.

Ilene was employed as a Legal Secretary for 33 years, first at the Utah Court of Appeals, then the law firm of Parsons Behle & Latimer.  The last 14 years of her career she worked for the Davis County Attorney’s Office retiring in 2004, finally able to devote full time to designing and stitching.  Her hobbies included reading, knitting, tole painting, counted cross stitch, scrap booking.  She was always at the ready for beating someone in their card game of choice & enjoying colorful jigsaw puzzles, but the love of quilt making was a perpetual activity, as she readily admitted to being a “fabric-aholic’!

Ilene was given to service and supporting others in need. Her membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and her participation in the Relief Society to assist and relieve suffering anywhere, are core to her soul.  Ilene will be profoundly missed until our joyful reunion for her boundless and thoughtful gifts, her sharing of unconditional love, and her eternal optimism relying on the grace of our Savior Jesus Christ.
