Irene Martinez Rivera
April 25, 1931 — August 6, 2015
Irene gracefully returned to her Heavenly Father after a courageous battle with dementia at the age of 84. Born in Salt Lake City to Castullo Delgado and Domitilla Rivera Martinez, along with brothers, Eliseo, Samuel, Arturo, Ephriam, and Joel. While preparing to attend BYU, Irene was called to serve in the Mexican mission and devoted her college savings to serving the Lord. Irene married Dr. Orlando Arthur Rivera on August 16, 1957. Irene worked for several insurance companies in Salt Lake City before devoting her full attention to her family Arturo, Patricia (Patrick Lucero), George (Heidi), and Selena (Justin Berg). Irene had many interests, including genealogy, attending BYU Education week and University of Utah basketball games, but her passion came in devoting herself to her husband, family, children and callings. Irene took genuine pleasure in the tasks associated to those roles. She supported Orlando through out the completion of his Phd. and his career at the University of Utah. Irene also encouraged her children's education, all graduates of the U including Arturo (MD), Patti (RN), George (Fine Arts), and Selena (Health Education). Irene and Orlando spent the family years serving in the Lucero and Bonneville LDS Wards, where Irene faithfully served in many callings, her favorite as Primary President with the children of the ward. Later in life, Irene and Orlando answered many calls to serve including a mission to the Salt Lake Inner City Mission and a mission to support Orlando in Presidency of the Mexico City Temple. Welcomed to the next stage of progression by her mother, father, husband and son Arturo, as well as her brothers Samuel, and Arturo, we know she has received a loving welcome in the next life. Irene's family would like to offer our tender thanks to all of those who helped Irene through the last difficult stages of this life, including the staff at Sunrise of Sandy, Dr. Anne Pendo, and Hospice Nurse Jolene.
