Jack LeRoy Sloan

Our gentle, reserved husband, father and grandfather Jack LeRoy Sloan passed away peacefully at the age of 77 in his home in Bountiful Utah after a brief illness following many years of declining health.

Jack is survived by his wife Dixie Morris, 17 grandchildren, his children Steven Sloan of Florida, Jenny Butler (Richard) of Stansbury Park Utah, Audrey Beck (Cameron) of San Diego California, Abraham Sloan (Lindsay) of Murray Utah, Jackie Sanders (Jeffery) of Denver Colorado. He is also survived by his sister Carolyn Kohler of Salt Lake City Utah and his brother Craig Sloan of Salt Lake City Utah. He is preceded in death by his parents, his son Paul Sloan and his brother Ron Sloan.

Those who had the chance to know Jack were lucky indeed. He was a thoughtful ponderer with a quiet understanding. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he spoke often of his relationship and love for his Savior Jesus Christ. He never wavered in his testimony but kept it close to his heart. His love for the Savior and desire to follow Him led him to meet and marry Dixie Morris in the Salt Lake Temple on April 8, 1976. He served as a scout leader, member of several bishoprics, and realized a life-long desire to serve as a missionary when he and Mom answered a call to serve in the New Zealand Wellington Mission from January 2008 to July 2009.

Dad lived most of his life in Utah. He was born to Joseph Hyrum and Marjorie Thorup on March 9, 1940 in Salt Lake City. Those who knew Jack and his hobbies understood his reasons for staying in Utah. He loved the outdoors. His knack for finding all the best fishing holes was uncanny. His love for wildflowers, streams, wilderness, mountains and all their majesty could be found in his favorite spots in the High Uintahs. He shared his love for gardening, fishing and hiking with his family. Summer times were spent camping, trekking and finding the best undiscovered country. To this day a favorite family retreat is Moon Lake in the southern Uintahs, a spot Jack first discovered with his Boy Scout Troup as a teenager.

During his 23 years as an employee of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and later in life, Dad developed his talent for landscape oil painting. Largely self-taught, Dad never passed up the opportunity to go on a photo shoot to capture reference material for his next painting-another opportunity to appreciate the serenity and beauty of God's creations. Then, with photo in hand and classical music for company he'd retire to his art studio and create a beautiful piece of art, each more beautiful than the last. For years his art appeared in museums and exhibit halls. His work survives today and inspires beauty in more than a hundred homes throughout the West. His passion for the arts also extended to classical music and encompassed both reading and writing poetry. Dad appreciated beauty in all its forms and strove to share it through his talents as an artist.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 19, 2018 at the Bountiful 53rd Ward, 1365 North 650 East, Bountiful. A viewing will be held Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful and Friday morning 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment-Wasatch Lawn Cemetery.
