James A Hendleman

Major James A. Hendleman, Jim, 78, of North Ogden, passed away on Saturday, May 28, 2022. Jim was born on January 2, 1944 in Akron, Ohio to James A. Hendleman, Sr. and Esther Louise Keller. Jim was an exceptionally fast runner and he loved sports. His favorite was baseball and, after playing for the University of Tennessee (Go Vols!), he was drafted to play professionally. However, a broken leg led him to instead join the military where he also excelled. Major Hendleman was a very decorated veteran who served in the Vietnam Phoenix Program as an Army Intelligence Analyst. During what was a very difficult time for men of other skin colors to be in the military, Major Hendleman created a common room, which he stacked with snacks, drinks, and games and all races under his command (and others who snuck over from nearby companies) found peace and friendship with each other. Later when he was living in Virginia and working at the Pentagon, he noticed some missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ tracting through an ice storm. He thought they were government personnel and discreetly got their contact information from his neighbors. He invited them over and interrogated them for the truth – which they gave. He set down his pipe, threw away his coffee maker, and, in 1980, he was baptized. He taught the gospel to his children and had a strong testimony his whole life. He has written and published several books on various interests, but the details of his every day and legacy for his posterity are in a multi-volume, handwritten journal he has kept diligently his whole life. Jim is lovingly remembered by his four children and 9 grandchildren.
