James worked for Amoco Oil Refinery for 38 years, retiring at the age of 58. He and his eternal companion served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Calgary, Canada from February 1988-September1989. Following their mission, they moved to North Salt Lake, Utah. He and his wife served in the Salt Lake LDS Temple for three years and in the Bountiful LDS Temple for seven years.
