James Dale Monson
1934-2017
James Dale Monson was born in Portland, Oregon on January 3rd, 1934 to Harley Winfred and Leah Smith Monson. He passed away October 27th, 2017. Jim grew up in Smithfield, Utah where he attended North Cache High School and then Utah State University before enlisting in the US Army. He later obtained a Masters Degree from Weber State University. He married Rose Marie Schiffman in the Logan Temple on November 30th, 1956. He later married Judy Herink on October 6th, 2009. Over his 20-year career as an officer in the US Army, he was stationed at bases throughout the United States and Europe achieving the rank of Major. His service included three hardship tours—one to Korea and two to Viet Nam. He was awarded numerous military medals including the Purple Heart medal, and several Bronze Star medals. Once retired from the Army, Jim indulged his life-long passion for teaching in the Davis County School District. He retired from teaching in 1994.
He was an active member of the LDS church, where he served faithfully in various callings in the boy scouts, young mens, and high priests quorum. He served an LDS mission at Ft. Gordon in Georgia during his retirement years. Jim also quietly supported many young missionaries in his ward financially over the years due to his passion for missionary work.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Valois Atkins and Janet Monson, his brother Kenneth Monson and his wife Rose Marie.
He is survived by his wife Judy Herink Monson and his daughters Mary Ann Monson (Robert Ward), Linda Monson, Tina Marie Monson and Rebecca Lynn Hatch (Gary). He is also survived by his eight grandchildren who loved him dearly; Joe Chavis, Tyler Chavis, Abel Chavis, Sean Rosemary Ward, Robert Francis Ward, James Kieran Ward, Kristalyn Marie Jones (James), and Brooke Kaye Hatch. He is also survived by his sisters Marty Bullen and Peggy Olsen.
Funeral services will be held at the North Canyon meeting house 3350 South 100 East, Bountiful, Utah on November 2nd at 11:00AM. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral at 9:45AM. Online guest book at www.russonmortuary.com.
