James “Jim” Cardon Reading, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2017. He was 79 years old.
Born December 7, 1937 in Ogden, Utah to Keith Evans Reading and Lucile Cardon Reading. He grew up in Oakland, California; Provo, Utah; and Centerville, Utah in the Reading family home.
Jim loved knowledge. From an early age he was excited to learn, especially about numbers. He attended Centerville Elementary, Bountiful Jr. High, Bountiful High School and graduated from Davis High School. Jim always had a deep love for his hometown of Centerville.
After High School he was accepted to Stanford University where he received his B.S. in Math, an M.S. in Computer Science and a Ph.D. in Statistics. He always loved Stanford sports and would cheer for them every time they played. After receiving his B.S., his National Guard unit was called up and he spent time in Texas.
He met his eternal companion, Lorna Wright, while attending school in California. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple, August 31, 1964.
He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He loved his Savior, the gospel and magnified the callings he held. He always chose family first! Instead of staying in the Bay Area he chose to move with his wife, Lorna, to Utah to be near family. He was hired at the University of Utah in 1970 and worked as a statistician in the Family Preventative Medicine department until his retirement in 2001. He worked hard, was honest and a faithful supporter of his wife, children and grandchildren.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Patricia Wright. He is survived by his loving wife, and 4 children: Michelle (John) Wardle, Centerville; Stephanie (Sean) Whyte, Orem; Christina (Darin) Wilcox, Centerville; Matthew (Kimberly) Reading, Albuquerque and 11 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Don (Jean) Reading, Boise; and brother-in-law, Orson Wright, Salt Lake City.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 1, 2017 at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, Utah at 11:00am. A viewing will be held from 9:30 – 10:30, prior to the service. Online guest book at www.russonmortuary.com.
