James Stewart Horne "Bucky"

Always one for big surprises, Buck unexpectedly left us this week. He is survived by Candace Horne and their three children: Meredith, Lauren, and Jacob. Survived also by his parents, Roger and Carol Horne, his in-laws, Ron and Nancy Nielsen, seven siblings, and a large extended family.

Buck described his early years as the perfect childhood. With the woods of northern Virginia as his playground, and his trusty dog Bingo at his side, he probably felt like a king. He loved growing up with so many cousins, and spoke of those memories so fondly. Charismatic to the core, his adolescence was filled with many friends and enough “adventure” to supply more stories than could be shared in a day. He later moved to Utah and attended the University of Utah, which is where he met Candace. Never one to move slow, they were soon married and within a few years, their wonderful children had arrived. Buck was a devoted father from the first minute until the very end. His priorities were taking care of his children and Candace; he loved them so much.

Buck had a gift for connecting with people. While he didn’t stay in touch with many throughout his adult life, wherever he was he made friends who loved him dearly. He was generous to a fault, and was highly praised and regarded wherever he was involved. He spent almost 10 years with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, did CIVPOL work for nearly 4 years, living in Iraq and South Sudan, and most recently worked as a manager for CenturyLink in northern Utah. He loved excitement and had much energy and a sense of wonder. He was fortunate to explore many places in this world. He loved being in water, and especially loved the ocean. He always dreamed of living on a (very large) sailboat with his family. In spite of the many amazing places he visited, his most valued adventure was taking his family to France because he wanted his children to experience and love Paris as much as he did.

We are so saddened by this loss and thank you for your exceedingly kind words of love and support. So many of you have asked what you can do. We would love it if you would email us your memories, stories, pictures, etc. so his kids can know parts of their dad’s life that they will never have the chance to hear of from him. Memorial services will be held on Saturday January 14, 2017 at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 1941 N Main Street, Farmington UT 84025. Visitation will be held from 2:00-3:30pm followed by a service from 4:00-5:00pm.
