Dorothy Janett (Jan) Larsen Mayo was born March 21, 1929 in Salt Lake City, to Joseph Hyrum and Pauline Targhetta Larsen. She died Monday January 14, 2019 in Bountiful at age 89 of causes incident to age. She is survived by her husband Albert William Mayo; three children, Stephen (Mickee) Mayo, Keith (Shirley) Mayo, and Jan (Rod) Massie; eleven grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
She had eight siblings – Edward, Elena, Darrow, Orrin, Margaret, Richard, Bob, and Anna Belle. She grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated from East High School. She married her best friend Ab on May 19, 1949 in the Salt Lake City temple. They enjoyed 69 wonderful years together. Jan raised her family in Farmington, where they lived for 64 years. She even helped raise her sister Anna Belle and later took in her brother Bob for a time. She was active in her LDS ward and served in numerous callings. Jan was active in the Farmington Lions club and numerous community service events. She was the first lady to be honored with the title of Farmington Woman of the Year.
Jan worked at the U.S. Post Office in Farmington for 13 years and was dearly loved by her community. She loved people and would throw a family or neighborhood party anytime she could, which she did often. She loved to cook and always wanted to feed anyone and everyone. She adored her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was always crafting, making ceramics or painting with them or for them.
She loved the mountains and loved the outdoors but especially she loved her cabin. She even lent out the cabin for family and friends – keeping track of it all on a calendar dedicated to who had the cabin reserved for which weekend. She also loved camping or cabining with family and close friends Sorenson’s, Buhler’s and Hodson’s; whether it was riding motorcycles in little Sahara, playing duck-on-a-rock, or sitting around a campfire.
There will be a viewing Friday, January 18 from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Russon Mortuary in Farmington. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 19 at 11:00 am in the Farmington Rock Church on 300 North Main Street with a viewing before from 9:45 am to 10:45 am.
