Jane Argyle Page, age 97, passed away quietly on March 3, 2016 surrounded by her loved ones. Jane was born April 17, 1918 in Woods Cross, Utah to Thomas Mann Argyle and Mary Jane Corbett Argyle. She was the eldest in a family of five children. She loved to share with family and friends her fond memories of her childhood in West Bountiful explaining her daily chores and simple life as a child. She graduated from Davis High School in Kaysville, Utah. Shortly after graduation she met her future husband, John William Page, at the Beck Street Municipal Pool in Salt Lake City. They were married on August 13, 1937 in the Salt Lake Temple. They set up residency in West Bountiful, Utah.
Jane and John raised a family of four sons and one daughter. Their home and garden were adjacent to the West Bountiful Elementary School property. John and Jane planted and harvested a large garden. Jane was busy all summer in the kitchen canning fruits and vegetables. Their biggest enterprise each year was raising, butchering and preparing 100 chickens for the freezer.
John and Jane had numerous callings in the LDS Church, but their most successful contribution to their West Bountiful Ward family was their joint service in the scouting program of the church. Many young men earned the most valued award of scouting, the Eagle Scout, through the support and encouragement of John and Jane.
John passed away in 1968 from a heart attack and Jane chose to remain single for the next 48 years. Her two youngest sons became very close to their mother as she cared for them alone during their teenage years. She was frugal with her money, but at the same time maintained the family home and yard in pristine style. Children from the nearby school loved to watch Jane caring for her many roses, irises and day lilies. She always referred to her yard and garden as the "Garden of Eden". She was famous for her cinnamon rolls and peach pies. A dinner at Jane's home was always a choice experience.
Jane's fondest experience in the church was serving in the Salt Lake Temple. She especially loved Saturday mornings when she was busy assisting brides with their wedding dresses. She faithfully served in the temple for seven years.
After John's death, Jane worked several years in the kitchen at the West Bountiful School preparing lunch for the children. The children loved the rolls she would prepare each day. She was always friendly and kind to them. She wasn't afraid to dress up in a costume on Halloween Day to thrill the children. When an opportunity opened up for her to accept employment with the Utah State Tax Commission in Salt Lake City, she chose to accept and continued working there until her retirement.
Her life wasn't just work. As a young girl, she had always wanted to learn to dance and so in her midlife she signed up for ballroom dancing lessons. She had several opportunities to perform with her dance partner in competition. She especially enjoyed dressing up in beautiful dresses. She took advantage of her dancing skills by attending dances in Salt Lake City with her friends. In her later years she would visit the Bountiful Senior Center where she would dance the morning away.
Jane was blessed with 5 children, 19 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. She will be greatly missed by her family.
She is survived by her brother Dean Argyle, sons Thomas (Dixie), Carl (Sherri) and Mark (Elaine), daughter JoAnn (Dean) Knighton and daughter-in-law Jacque Page. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son John Alan Page, brothers Douglas and Clarence Argyle, her sister Evelyn Winegar, and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at the West Bountiful Second Ward Chapel, 840 North 800 West. The viewing will be held Monday evening, March 7, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Russon Brothers Funeral Home, 295 North Main, Bountiful and also Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
