After a beautiful Easter weekend, Jan passed away from a long illness while surrounded by so many she loved. She was fiercely loyal and attentive to family. Whether referred to as Jan, Sweetheart, Daughter, Mom, Sis, or Grammy, she was involved and influential in so many lives.
She came into the world with fireworks on the fourth of July 1946, in Springville, Utah, the third daughter of five to Kenneth and Leora Ostler. She later lived in Bountiful and Farmington Utah.
She was a gracious and resilient soul, determined to change the world for the better, and she did. Her accomplishments were many. She set goals and achieved them; she was always learning. Her wall of gospel & self-help books was impressive. She was an artist and designer. Her mediums varied from color and textile, oils and clay, flowers, soil and of course, eye-popping interior spaces.
Although her life wasn’t always easy, she taught her children and grands to “look up”, or “look closely”, and to see things with ‘new eyes’ – always with an early morning call on the first snowfall to “look outside”! If there was an exceptionally beautiful full moon, the call was coming, you could count on it. She was always planning family get togethers that involved fireworks, food (and a good water fight in the summer), family gingerbread house competitions at Christmas, as well as songs and magical stories by firelight in the winter.
In times of sickness or health, happiness or sadness, married or a single mom, our mothers’ testimony and fortitude were remarkable. Mom was an endowed member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings as well as using her talents privately to bless countless others.
She became a business owner, a designer, and top real estate agent. She traveled the world, then brought back the colors of adventure and shared it abundantly with her family.
Mom loved stories of redemption. Especially Scrooge with Albert Finney. Her music permeated our home and hearts. She loved to dance, fish, camp, and paint, and even in her later years she was teaching great grandchildren to play tennis.
Married to Ron Alvey later divorced, she is the cherished mother of two children: Sid (Arlene) Alvey, – Bountiful, UT, and Jacquie (Rick) Jones – Kaysville, UT. Four sisters, Kay Earley (deceased), Karen Childs, Jolene Ostler and Debbie Hall. Jan is a grandmother to 9 fabulous grandchildren, Megan & Derek, Kaity & Chris, Taylor & Rebecca, Dylan, Sam, Lauren & Gavin, Levi & Ashley, Alexis & Mitchel, and Addie & Joshua, 10 great grands, and two more on their way.
We’d like to thank the hospice (Renew) friends that diligently helped her navigate the difficulty of Alzheimer’s with the most tender care.
