Janice Hadlock Slagowski

Janice Hadlock Slagowski was born June 9, 1937 in Ogden, Utah.  She fought a long, courageous battle with dementia for ten years and died peacefully at home November 17, 2019.
Janice was the second of four children born to Norma and Heber Hadlock.  They divorced and Norma married Eugene "Gene" Spanton. Five more children were born to this union, and Gene raised the other four children as his own.
As a new 1955 graduate of Davis High School, Janice got a job working at the popular local amusement park called Lagoon. It was there that Jerry Slagowski spotted a cute ride operator  he wanted to date. They were married later that fall in the Salt Lake Temple.
Jerry and Janice had seven children, six of whom lived. Janice always wanted more children but physically could not withstand any additional pregnancies; so they took in a Navajo boy, Darvin Dayea, on the Indian Placement Program. He lived with the family for ten years. He was a part of the family until his death.
Janice tutored several neighboring  Navajo children on reading skills. Her family enjoyed her cooking. Janice canned plenty of fruit every summer. Water aerobics was a favorite way to socialize and stay fit. She also belonged to a book club which she enjoyed.
Together, Jerry and Janice converted a bread van into a camper dubbed the "Slag Mobile." Jerry did the construction of the beds, closets, etc. and Janice sewed the curtains and cushions. Many memorable outings were spent camping and water skiing as a family with the Jay and Lisa Swain Family. Pineview Reservoir was a particular favorite place.
As an accomplished seamstress, she could sew just about anything. Sewn items included dresses, shirts, skirts, pants, swimming suits, quilts, and she even learned how to sew hats and underwear! She joined a quilting club and produced all sorts of beautiful items.
Janice was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She filled many different callings in various organizations. She loved serving in Primary most. Jerry and Janice both served as ordinance workers in the Bountiful LDS Temple.
Janice was a kind, soft-spoken woman. Tending babies made her especially happy. She will be fondly remembered for the many hours of service she rendered on other's behalves.
Janice was preceded in death by her mother, father, step-father, son, Troy, son-in-law, David Williams, grandson, Richard Slagowski, and great-grandson, Weston Matthews.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry, their children Linda (David) Williams, Karen (Kevin) Matthews, Boyd (Maugasa) Slagowski, Jan (Kurt) Giles, Holly (Doug) Rechis, and Bryce (Tess) Slagowski. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank all of the many family members, friends, neighbors, Encompass Hospice, and other caregivers that have given so much time and energy to help Janice and Jerry.
Viewings will be held Friday, Nov. 22 from 6-8 at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, UT., and Saturday, Nov. 23 from 9:45-10:45 at the Centerville 3rd Ward, 900 South 400 East, Centerville, UT., where funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m.
Burial will be in the Centerville Cemetery.
