Jared Smurthwaite

Biography

Jared Lathrop Smurthwaite was born June 1, 1986 in Modesto, California. Even in his earliest years, Jared exhibited a tremendous ability to reach into the hearts of those who surrounded him through Christ-like service. Growing up, Jared was the most generous of children and, when the appropriate time came, he served honorably for two years in the Texas Houston Mission under President Travis Steward. It was near the end of his mission that Jared received the tragic news that his mother had passed away. Instead of concluding his service early, Jared returned to the mission field after his mother’s memorial services. It was in his last area that Jared met his future wife, Jahzeel Mendoza. They were married in the Houston Temple on March 8, 2008.

Jared passed through the veil on Saturday, April 21st, having taken his own life following the tragic death of his wife, Jahzeel. While we will never fully understand the circumstances surrounding their deaths, we take comfort in the memory of a Jared that lived and loved as the Savior taught. His dear mother, Velisa Smurthwaite and wife, Jahzeel, preceded him in death. Jared is survived by his son, Isaac; father Richard (Pamela); biological mother Melissa; brothers David (Marisa), Craig (Roxy), Aaron, and stepbrothers Spencer (Kami) and Trevor; nieces and nephews Noah, Sam, Oliver, Eliot, and Karma; grandparents Marie and Charles Lake and James Richard Smurthwaite III (Louise).

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 4th, at 12:00 Noon at the Bountiful North Canyon Stake Center, 965 Oakwood Dr. Friends and family may call Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 N. Main or Friday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the church prior to the funeral.
