Jay Harris Goodfellow

February 18, 1938 — October 13, 2021

Jay Harris Goodfellow passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on October 13, 2021. He was 83 years old. Jay was born February 18, 1938, in Burley, Idaho. He was the youngest child of Samuel Burt and Mary Jane Harris Goodfellow.

Jay moved with his family to Roy, Utah in 1941 when he was three years old. He lived in Roy until 1955 when his family moved to Pleasant View, Utah. Jay attended Roy Elementary, South Ogden Jr. High and Weber High School. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve for 6 years. Jay attended Weber Jr. College, BYU and Utah State University. He graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Business Education and taught school for 35 years. Jay enjoyed teaching. It was rewarding for him to see his students succeed. Jay spent the last 22 years of his teaching career at Davis Applied Technology Center in Kaysville. He retired from teaching in 2000.

Jay met Kathryn (Kay) Farnes while he was attending BYU. They were married February 1, 1963, in the Logan Temple. They are the parents of six children, grandparents of 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Jay was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in numerous callings in the church throughout his life. He served a mission to Hawaii from 1958 to 1960. During his retirement years, he served for two years in the Bountiful Temple, and he served two full-time missions with his wife Kay. They served in the Virginia Richmond Mission and the Michigan Lansing Mission. Jay and Kay also served three part-time Service Missions in Family History. Two of the Family History Missions were in Salt Lake, and one was at the Family Search Center in Layton.

Jay was a hard worker. His Dad instilled a strong work ethic in him as they worked together in the family-owned coal business and on the family farm in Roy. It was important to Jay to keep things maintained and in good working condition. He was especially meticulous about his cars. He always made sure they were in excellent running condition and clean on the inside as well as on the outside.

Jay loved to be out in nature. He enjoyed working in his yard or going for a drive to the mountains. He loved seeing lakes, streams, snow-capped mountains and any other “picture perfect scenery”. He especially enjoyed going for a drive in the fall to see the colorful leaves and was also fascinated by the wildlife he would see in nature.

Jay is survived by his wife of 58 years and their children Brenda Day (Bruce), Wayne Goodfellow (Debi), Mary Lyn Larkin (Jeff), Sherrie Waters (Roger), Shauna Goodfellow, Alan Goodfellow (Jen) and one brother, Don Harris Goodfellow (Renee). He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mary Lou and Blanche Goodfellow, a granddaughter Allison Day and a son-in-law Jeff Burningham.
