Jean Wilkinson Lewis
1924 ~ 2016
Jean Wilkinson Lewis, age 91 passed away April 17, 2016 in Bountiful, Utah after an illness.
Jean was born August 11, 1924 in Hoytsville, Utah to Joseph Mills Wilkinson and Zina Ann Brooks Wilkinson. Jean attended Salt Lake City schools and graduated from East High where she met Dale Ward Lewis and developed a friendship. Upon Dale’s return from his service in World War II, this relationship was rekindled and Jean and Dale were married on June 18, 1947, later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were devoted companions until Dale’s death in 1983.
Jean attended LDS Business College. She worked as an executive secretary to one of the vice presidents of Interstate Motor Lines. As a faithful member of the LDS Church Jean served in many calling and loved to sing in the ward choir. Jean also enjoyed sports and could be found rooting for her children and grandchildren at their games. You always knew if Jean was in the stands. She loved to play golf and played many rounds with her husband, sons, or with her lady friends at Davis Park Golf Course. But most of all Jean loved her family and often commented she didn’t know what she would do without these close family relationships. She was a loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Jean was a very generous person with both her resources and her time. She was adamant about not missing a family member’s birthday or other special event. After Dale’s death she began what came to be nearly 30 years of volunteer service to her community at local hospitals and nursing homes. She loved the friends she made and those she served while volunteering.
Jean is survived by her three sons; Steve (Cindy) Taylorsville; Tom (Pam) North Salt Lake; and Brian (Wendy), Farmington; 12 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren and will be greatly missed. Preceded in death by her parents, husband; sisters Myrla, Ruth, Rita, and Betty; brothers Ray, Jess, and Max.
The family extends deepest thanks to Jean’s dear friends and neighbors for their many kindnesses to her. Thanks also to the devoted medical and care professionals at Lakeview Hospital, Avalon Care Center, and Bristol Hospice for their service to our mother.
