Jeffrey Shane Pickering came to us on October 11, 1971 in Fontana, California. He lived in Ontario California with his parents John and Jeanne and older siblings Laura and John until he was two, when his parents divorced. Afterward, little Jeff moved with his mother and siblings to Salt Lake City for a while until his mother remarried and moved to Bountiful.
As Jeff grew, he learned the violin, did well in school, but also developed a distinct inclination for clever mischief and intrigue. Jeff would often leave the house, returning hours later with his friends who would sit in the living room and whisper and giggle about their latest escapade. When asked what he was up to, he would answer with his typical shy smile and tell us "Don't worry about it." Some things we never knew, others would be so visible and legendary he could never hide them from us, like when he and his friends rappelled off the side of the Crossroads Mall in Salt Lake. His parents worried about him, his siblings secretly revered him, but no matter who, everyone adored Jeff.
Jeff graduated from Bountiful High in 1992, served a mission to Wellington, New Zealand, and attended BYU where he married Janet Dodd and received a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Since he finished at BYU, Jeff has lived in Dallas, Texas working for IBM his entire career. While he and Janet divorced, they remained close friends even until the day of his passing.
On September 9, 2016, Jeff's mother received a phone call from his manager at IBM explaining he had not shown up for work that week. Anxious, his mother and family began a search for Jeff which spanned two days over two states and ended when a search and rescue team in Colorado found his lifeless body off a hiking trail.
Jeff touched so many, and the news of his passing has rippled over countless lives. He was everyone's favorite sibling, coworker, riding buddy, running partner, and friend. We are all grieving for him together.
Jeff is preceded in death by his step-father, John Grover, his grandparents, and his aunt Marylin. He is survived by his mother, Jeanne, father, John, step-mother Wanda Courey, siblings Laura, John, Michael, Kathy, Sean, and Casey, and too many close friends to number.
His funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the LDS Stake Center, 1250 South Main Street, Bountiful, where a viewing will be held from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to services.
Jeff, we love you more than you could ever possibly know.
